Roomies.

Today was filled with numerous phone calls relating to tomorrow’s arrival of my new roommate. The phone calls were all from one person — my mother.

“Are you sure about this?” said my mother.
“Yes,” I replied.

Fast forward to a few hours later.

“Preston, are you sure you want to do this?” my mother asked again.
“Mom, please. I am begging you. Stop calling and asking me. I’m fine,” I insisted.

My new roommate, my younger brother, will move into my apartment tomorrow. Cody is moving to Iowa City because of three reasons.

  1. As mentioned in a previous post, my brother has run into numerous rough patches during his life. Most of those rough patches have taken place recently. The vast majority of those rough patches stem from interactions with a non-ideal group of misfits in Clinton County.
  2. Also mentioned in my previous brother-related post was that it has been nearly impossible for him to find employment in Clinton, Iowa.
  3. Another throwback to Cody the Job Hunter: My brother’s “friend” grew tired of him sleeping on his couch. (So did the dog who had the fortune of using the couch as a bed prior to my brother’s squatting.) In my mind, there is no conceivable scenario in which my brother could stay with my parents for more than a few days without A) someone dying from an brain aneurysm, B) someone murdering someone, or C) the world ending. I want none of those things.

I’m going to do the best I can to be a good big brother. I’m going to try to help Cody find work in Iowa City. I’m going to try my hardest not to get angry when my brother chooses paths which differ from those I would choose.

I’m going to just be.

Roomies.

My brother and me.
